learning something new

If you know me, you know that I get bored pretty easily and i love to learn something new.....always.  I think that is why I love my job because i am never doing the same thing all the time and I get to experiment with different aspects of the business.
Such as........right now i am in a group where i get "lessons" and "tutorials" on how to market my business online.  Her name is Jennifer Allwood and you can visit her site and see what she does.

Weber Company Facebook Page
But basically, I have learned there are so many more sales opportunities online, like affiliate marketing, ad revenue, sponsored live videos, informational tutorials, 1 on 1 coaching, and membership groups!  My head is spinning with all kinds of new ideas, and I feel like a whole new world has been opened up to me!
The first thing I learned was that I need to post on my business Facebook page 4 Times a day........I knew when I told Mr. Know-it-All about this he would say something like, "you're bothering people, nobody wants to hear from you 4 times a day!"  And yes.......yes he did say that.  What I learned was that even if someone is following your business page doesn't mean they will see your content every time you post.  Actually only about 5% of your followers see any one post.  That's crazy to me but it also means I'm not bothering anyone per Mr. Know-it-All's suggestion.
So I'm good.
The main idea is that I have (HAVE) to post 2 LIVE videos a week on my page and that is hard to do as I am live so there's no changing anything that happens, it's live, and its scary to me.  I want to be sure what ever I am live about its worth peoples time to watch.

I really enjoyed opening my package live and found out that it was not the package I said or thought it was.  It was funny, at my expense and anytime I can make someone laugh is a good day.
Here's that video;

Enjoy!

naked wine story

So it was in April earlier this year i got a random phone call from a buyer at naked wines.  I didn't know what naked wines was, so i had to look them up and low and behold they sell wine! They sell wine memberships actually....
The buyer told me that he was looking for a type of gift that could fit into a wine bottle case with one wine bottle.  That way they could ship out the wine with a special gift.

So my wheels got turning....and i talk to Dad about it and we came up with these boards.

Dad spent about two hours coming up with these four different styles.  Two of them are just small enough for cutting and displaying cheese and the other two are good to use for holding your wine glass with putting a little cheese and crackers on the board.

So I submitted my photos and he liked them and asked for a prototype.  I sent all four along and then the waiting began.

I waited......followed up......waited some more......followed up and waited some more.

And then I got the "unfortunately" email.  This email is only ok if you are writing it not the other way around.  Anyways we have 4 new different types of wood products to sell and I plan on putting them on the website soon.

I did follow up with the buyer last week to find out how the vendor they did choose and their products are selling, but they are not to market yet.  I tell you what, he answered my email!  That's a good sign that maybe he likes me and will consider our products in the future.

being a pest wins the day!

Mr. Know-it-All (below in the photo with me on the top of the empire state building), is always giving me advice, and sometimes unsolicited, but he really insists that when I follow up with someone I am being a pest. He says, "April you're bothering this person and being a pest, if they don't call you back they don't want to talk to you."  Sorry.......... but not necessarily....Mr. Know-it-All.
They like me they just don't know it yet.
Now I have had my share of people or persons rejecting me and not calling back or telling me they are not interested, (by the way, I hate that part of the job).  But some people WANT to be pursued.  I was just given a compliment the other day for being tenacious and a following up and the first thing I thought of was Mr. Know-it-All and I smiled. :)  Now we all know Mr. Know-it-All means well, but it doesn't mean he is ALWAYS right.
Before you start thinking about how I might possibly be annoying I want you to know that I don't like being a pest, or being persistent when someone doesn't follow up with me.  Its not my style, I have to force myself to do it for the good of the company.  When you have persistence I have found it wins most of the time.
My dad always says being in business for yourself is like getting hired and fired every day.
That info really made me want to take over the business. I said, "Where can I sign up? Sounds like fun dad! Why didn't you tell me this sooner? Lets get hired and fired today!"  I thought wow he must like drama, although he is not dramatic at all.  So now I take a look at being hired and fired as a challenge that I will be hired a lot more than fired.

I have been pursuing a variety of jobs and one in particular I have been working on for about 6 months of pursuing.  Its a great job!  I am doing the cabinets for 45 houses in Hollister. I am all hyped up about it and super nervous because I do not want to make any big mistakes.  I know mistakes will happen but I would like to prevent them any way I can.  I was given all the drawings back that I drew for the 3 house plans of cabinets approved and signed this morning.  Now I am on to the next step which will be ordering the cabinets and getting my calendar ready for delivery's and installations.  The purchasing agent for this job told me "thank you" for being persistent and calling her to follow up, it got me the job!"

I really cannot believe this is happening.  I am so grateful and thankful.  Since I lost that job in Stanford (now is two years ago), I have been quoting a lot of jobs similar to that one and this one was picked for me!

Thank you all for your support and love throughout the years.  I am so grateful for you all!  I will keep you posted and hopefully have some great stories of how I can show Jesus' love with this job.
And thank you Mr. Know-it-All for always challenging me and causing me to try harder. :)

how do i show Jesus' love through cabinetry?

Sometimes I wonder, well ok......... all the time I wonder how do I show Jesus' love with custom cabinets and woodwork?  Where does He fit in to all of this?  I have always thought that it would be easier if you had the occupation of a pastor or a missionary.  Every day is bookmarked for Jesus.  I think, "am I doing what Jesus wants me to do?" "Am I giving him control today, or am I taking it back?"  I have really been asking that a lot......I want to be doing Jesus' will in my life.

And then I read in the bible about work and what it entails in Colossians 3:23 (Amplified Version)
" Whatever you do (whatever your task may be), work from the soul (that is, put in your very best effort), as for the Lord and not for men, knowing (with all certainty) that it is from the Lord (not from men) that you will receive an inheritance which is your (greatest) reward.  It is the Lord Christ whom you (actually) serve."

I feel like I am in that valley of life where I am not sure which way I am supposed to go but according to this verse I am to serve God with all I do.
These questions of "what am I doing" really lay heavy on my heart and make me think.........How do I be creative in witnessing through cabinets?  I feel like its awkward to say "hey do you love your cabinets? Now lets talk about Jesus!"  By my actions I try to be nice and courteous and hope they see Jesus' love, and then we can talk about him......... maybe............ I will let you know how it goes........you know I'm not big into rejection or making situations weird.  Its the delivery I need help with!

Recently I have been able to design some kitchen remodels and its really allowing me to get to know our clients on a deeper level. They are trusting me to create a beautiful and functional space for them.  This is a big task that I do not take lightly and I am asking them to trust me with their space that they live in.  Its a big deal to me, and I so want them to just love it when its all done!! This allows me to get an idea of what they like and do and also maybe an insight into their lives.

Here are some drawers and doors I have been painting and glazing for a kitchen remodel that we built in the last couple of weeks.

It took us two days to install this kitchen.  I have the finished pictures below this is before the flooring, countertops, and appliances go in.

This is the Back of the island above and to my right is the corner area of the kitchen where the sink, stove, and hood micro will be going.
This is the front of the island and it has great storage inside with pullout trays.

Then we have the display wall where I placed 4 glass doors in the center so she will have the ability to show off any colorful plates, bowls, wine glasses, etc.

I am so happy with how this kitchen turned out.  I really enjoyed painting it and installing it.  The client was so happy and I was thrilled, I honestly just told her that I was and am so thankful that she allowed us to be able to remodel her kitchen.  It was a true joy.

If you are able to witness for Jesus' and talk about Him to your coworkers or clients I would love to know your story.  Write in the comment section below.
Truly if there is any way I can show people that Jesus' love for them surpasses all understanding and that He is Always there when you pray, I will do it.  I cannot do anything without His love and support.

this is a God thing

So without even trying, meaning I was literally sitting at my desk and the phone rang.  I got a call from a wine distributer who would like to "possibly" sell my boards totaling 6,000 of each item! They want a board that is small enough to fit in a wine bottle box.

I talked to my dad about designs and he came up with four different ones that will fit into a wine bottle box and he did it in one afternoon.
one afternoon!  my dad is amazing!

These are unique and small in that it fits in a wine bottle box with a bottle of wine so you won't have to ship it separately.

After the buyer said he liked them he asked me to ship them over for the team to look at them.  I had two weeks before they were to decide.  Last Tuesday was two weeks and he kindly let me know that the team didn't think they were large enough to sell well and didn't look appealing enough..............but have a nice day, I can send you a case of wine for your trouble.
I thought it was over.
I thought, I should have made these with a darker wood........darn
Then I talked to my friend from QVC.  She said, "no April its not over! you make another one in the darker wood, you put a hole in it, take off 0.15 cents from the price, you finish it off with a leather strap, and you send him jpegs immediately!"  That gave me a little pep in my step and hope.  So I did what I was told, and I cut out another wine bottle out and put a hole in it.
I really think I like these better regardless.....its probably the darker wood, I always gravitate to the darker wood.
I followed up today and I admitted that I was a "cheery pest" to the wine distributer.  Then I got an email back that no decisions have been made yet, and he would keep me informed of "positive" developments. He didn't dodge me or ignore me, or even delete me.
Mr.Know-it-All says I am a pest most of the time when I keep "following up" with people but I just take that as I know what I'm doing.
Well what do you all think?  Do you like these? Would you purchase one?  They will probably retail at $9.95. if they are sold.  If............

its the little things

Happy Valentines Day 2018!  Its hump day and Valentines day!  I was at the Wine & Chocolate Festival selling cutting boards at Housley's Century Oak Winery this last weekend.  I had thought I would make some coasters (the square ones), but then I remembered Valentines Day was coming up so I made some heart shaped coasters.  I only made three sets of 4 and I sold every set.  They were pretty popular.  I think I need to make more for next year.

These are made with Cherry lumber and sanded with love 💓

I think i will put them on my website and possibly on Etsy.

I'm also thinking I will make them in different species.

About a week before the wine & chocolate event my sales rep, a.k.a. Mr. Know-it-All told me i needed to make the California shaped boards and that they would sell out so i should make a lot.  Well i found some good long pieces of cherry and maple lumber to use and cut out California 4 times.  Believe me, if you zoom in on this picture and look at the coast line you should be able to tell that I took a lot of time to cut California out.  I used a band saw and very carefully cut out the SF bay.

If you know Mr. Know-it-All you will learn that when he thinks something is going to happen (like selling out of the California boards), and it doesn't he is understandably disappointed.  Results. I sold 1.  And believe you me Mr. Know-it-All was "shocked" that they didn't all sell because he knew they would all sell. The second day he had me put them in a more prominent spot on the table but to no avail it didn't work.  I on the other hand, I thought they might be a hit but I wasn't sure.

I have found that these types of events are for smaller items, things that people don't mind carrying around while they are sipping wine and tasting chocolate.  I don't blame John Doe for not wanting to carry California around with his wine glass. 😄 All in all it was a great weekend!  I got to meet old friends and make some new ones.
We had a chocolate booth, a gourmet popcorn and chips booth, a booth with pictures taken by Adam Housley, an olive oil booth and me.  We were all able to take a photo together at the end of the first night.

growing pains

Its the last day of the first month of the year and I can't believe how fast it went.  We were working on two different kitchens and one was put in the second week of January and the other was put in last week.
The first one was painted cabinets with a glaze in the routing. We made the doors a style with grooves in order to have a place for the brown glaze.  I did have fun using a tiny brush to put the glaze in!   All the photos are close up because the counters, flooring, and appliances are not in yet.

I wanted to make sure that the glazing was also able to be in the frames of the cabinets in various areas so I put fluting in when I could.  That is the three grooves on the right side of the drawer fronts in the pictures.  It gives the cabinet an extra something!

The island was special too! It was made with Knotty Alder and stained a light brown.

Next I have the second kitchen which is not all the way done....just the cabinets are in.
This kitchen was made with natural birch lumber and stained a brown espresso.  I just love it!
This is the cabinet where the refrigerator will be going.  I did a variance of heights on the upper cabinets to give the room some dynamics.

I can't wait till all these are complete....and I will be able to get final photos.
Both Kitchens are in Lodi, California and I loved working with both families.  It was my pleasure.

*Update on my last post about the "big" job I have been waiting on an official answer to.  I was told that they decided to use another vendor.  They said they would keep me close in case this vendor doesn't do well.......well if you know me you know what I was thinking. Um. No. Please don't bother keeping me waiting in the wings.....I will fly on to other green pastures.
I actually wasn't that upset, and I was proud of myself....no crying........until I called Mr. Know-it-All.  Big Mistake.  He always has my back and he was upset about their decision.  He made it real and said, "what!! they led you on for a year! Blah Blah Blah....." and then the tears flowed....
But, now that its been a few days I am better and more rational and I believe what I have said all along, "If God wants me to have the job, I will have the job. He knows what's best and what I need."

growing pains.....aren't they fun?

new year, new perspective

Do you ever wonder if what you are doing is in God's will?  Do you ever worry that you are not doing what you're supposed to do?
After all the worrying i decided to go on Twitter and saw this great quote from Gianna Jessen: "God is holding on to you. Tell him what's in your Heart.  It matters to him."

I realized that Yes! God does want to hear about my cabinet woes, yes he wants me to put him first and trust him completely, and yes he thinks i matter.  That was the big one, I matter.  It makes me emotional every time i hear it because sometimes you just don't feel like you matter and what you're doing is not that important.
I was going over a job I quoted a little over a year ago on Friday and i am supposed to hear back this week.  Its one that i mentioned before that i was supposed to be hearing back in March 2017, then April 2017, then June 2017, etc. etc.  Am i really going to hear back this week?  I really hope so and i want to..........
It made me realize that God is in control, if he wants me to have the job i will.  He knows what's best.

But of course I was panicking about this very thing Monday & Tuesday and it really shook me.  Am i doing God's will? Then my nightly (try to do every night 😉 bible reading), God shows me this little number:
1 Corinthians 10: 31
"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

Well didn't that just answer my question.  As long as I am doing everything for God's glory i am in his will.  I am super excited about that, and i am grateful for the opportunity he has given me.
And i think this year is going to be the BEST.EVER.

I am planning out my calendar......
all the days i can call people back, and bother them
all the days i can update my sales online of the cutting boards
all the days i can blog.....ahem
all the days i can update the website
all the days i can make measuring appointments
all the days i can buy a mint chocolate chip hot fudge sundae.....
are you still reading?
Not kidding, i really want a hot fudge sundae, maybe i will get one....for dinner.
I am hoping i will have an answer today or tomorrow and if that's the case i will be blogging again to give all the details of this new job and what it entails cause seriously its the BIG ONE. Not to get over excited or anything.

So now that i got my wondering under control and i got all this off my chest i can go on to other things......like following up or what Mr. Know-it-All calls "being a pest."
I think i could be the nicest pest in the world though. 😊
talk soon,
